Mary McCloskey
I came to photography late, after studying journalism and
working as a news reporter and press
spokesperson. When I discovered
photography, it was the intricacies of nature that stirred me.
I began a project on rivers and learned that each river
exhibits an individual personality of its own
that can be traced back to the
river’s original source. Through the silt it carries, the rocks it makes
smooth,
the vegetation it nourishes, a river writes its own biography.
Similarly, we weave our histories through
the experiences we share and the
wear and tear we place on our bones and brain.
I began to wonder about other patterns
in nature. Today, when I photograph the twining of a grapevine
or the
labyrinth under a length of dune grass, it’s our common history that I seek to
illuminate.
